The ‘P’ of People, Planet, Profit and… Peleman

The 'P' of People, Planet, Profit and... Peleman

It is impossible to imagine our (corporate) lives without sustainability. And rightly so. It is often a quest for the ideal balance between the three Ps: People, Planet and Profit. Sustainability, or Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), is therefore a form of business aimed at economic performance (profit), with respect for the social (people), within the ecological preconditions (planet). But how do you do it?

People

The P of People is about the people around you. Think of a healthy long-term relationship with your customers. Or a diverse, safe and pleasant working environment. After all, business performance largely depends on the commitment and professionalism of your employees. Therefore, focus on a streamlined employee journey, from the very first contact with your organisation to the moment your employee leaves.

How do we approach this at Peleman?

Happy employees make for happy customers. To ensure that our people are and remain enthusiastic about Peleman, we also developed an employee journey. Explaining the entire ’employee journey’ here and now would take us too long. butin essence and above all, we give our employees time and space to grow in their roles, including thorough training. We recognise and reward them when they do great things, not just focusing on the big successes. By also paying attention to small things, we want our people to feel special. For instance, we welcome all new employees with an onboarding box , and our managers already dare to sprinkle compliment cards from a branded box .

Planet

Protect our planet’s natural resources and climate for future generations. As an entrepreneur, you might think of quick wins like sorting and reducing waste and saving energy. Sustainable business is so much more than that. For instance, you can work with fewer or recycled materials. Did you know that 100% recycled FSC quality cardboard is the standard for our Hard Covers? Not always the case for alternatives. The FSC label gives assurance that the raw material for the paper and cardboard used comes from responsibly managed forests. Environmentally friendly and therefore the ideal choice for companies that want to leave a sincere, natural and lasting impression with their personalised presentations.

And how do we do that at Peleman?

Since 2011, our two in-house wind turbines have been generating around 2.3 MWh. In 2018, we switched to an industrial battery. One with a capacity of 2 megawatts per hour. Fully charged, it can provide enough energy to power around 200 families for a day. The wind turbines plus the battery mean that we get almost 100% of our energy from renewable power. We meet the remaining electricity needs as much as possible with locally generated wind power.

Profit

The 3rd P, Profit or also called profit, is a broad concept. It is not only about what remains under the line, but equally about pride, trust, commitment, innovation, quality, continuity, employment, productivity, positioning and reputation. Although social responsibility and sustainability are also perfectly compatible with financial gain. More so, social and environmental gains often create economic gains and a competitive edge. For instance, the market for sustainable products and services is still growing, and you save money by producing less waste and using energy and raw materials more sparingly. Other benefits?

  • A sustainable personnel policy leads to more productivity and less absenteeism.
  • Need money? Banks are increasingly looking at CSR before granting a loan.
  • Positive publicity creates a better image.
  • CSR boosts a company’s innovativeness.

Peleman's vision?

Peleman is not only pursuing a sustainable strategy in its own business activities, but also wants to play a pioneering role and communicate this to everyone in order to increase public support for energy efficiency. “Our wind turbines and battery are more than just an installation,” says CEO Esmeralda Peleman. “They are a way of thinking for us, like a philosophy of life that we also find in our partners.”
